Community Services Program
Program Overview
Minneapolis AFL-CIO Community Services is a partnership between the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation and the Greater Twin Cities United Way, covering the city of Minneapolis, and the following counties: Hennepin, Anoka, Carver, McLeod, Meeker, Scott, and Wright.
The Minneapolis Community Services program is changing. Below is a brief summary of services we provide as well as future goals:
Union member assistance
- Emergency Financial Aid
- Food Program
- Information and Referrals to community resources
- Strike support
Working with community agencies
- Partnerships with agencies to connect and assist union members
- Coalition-building for worker assistance and issue advocacy
- Serve as labor resource for providers
Providing opportunities for
community service among locals
- Volunteerism
- Help local unions make a deeper connection with their communities
- Working with local unions on their charitable events (i.e. NALC Food Drive)
- Recognize union members’ volunteer work
Non-partisan issue advocacy
- Voter registration and education
- Health care
- Apprenticeship and worker training
- Systems change in areas affecting members’ demonstrated need (i.e. energy costs)
Educational activities & events
- Strike and layoff support
- Training and education for providers
- Training and education for union members & staff
- Issue forums
United Way campaign
- Increase union giving
- Reach out to union workplaces
- Recognize union contributions
