Commentary
Thank you to affiliated unions, rank and file members, MRLF staff

From the Minneapolis Labor Review, September 25, 2015

By Bill McCarthy, President, Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation

Next month I will be resigning as president of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation and taking the oath of office as president of the Minnesota AFL-CIO.

I’ve used this space over the years to inform Labor Review readers about the activities of the MRLF, to educate readers about issues, and to urge readers to get involved in the work of your local union and the work of this federation.

In my final column, I want to say, thank you.

This organization is only as strong as the affiliates want it to be. When affiliates invest and participate and act in solidarity, we can accomplish just about anything.

The MRLF is stronger today because of the commitment of our affiliated unions.

Thank you.

Thank you, first of all, to the affiliated unions of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation.

In January 2002, you voted me into the office of president and entrusted me to lead what was then the Minneapolis Central Labor Union Council.

Thank you for your commitment to the cause of union solidarity.

Each month, you’ve invested in this organization with part of your members’ monthly dues.

You’ve also been generous with additional  funding for special issue campaigns and to support our political program.

You have contributed funds to support our non-profit, Working Partnerships, so that together we can assist union members in need during strikes, lock-outs, unemployment or times of personal emergencies.

You’ve also continued to support the Minneapolis Labor Review, which we’ve revitalized in the past dozen years.

But more than just providing your dollars, you’ve also supplied volunteers from among your elected leadership, staff, and rank and file union members.

The work of the MRLF would not be possible without the countless hours volunteered by affiliates and their members.

Together, we’ve increased the capacity of this organization to serve as an advocate for policies benefiting working families.

Together, we’ve embraced new technologies and more sophisticated organizing techniques so that we can make an impact on local, state, and federal elections and help win victories for candidates who will be advocates for working families.

This organization is only as strong as the affiliates want it to be. When affiliates invest and participate and act in solidarity, we can accomplish just about anything.
The MRLF is stronger today because of the commitment of our affiliated unions. Thank you.

Thank you, too, to the rank and file union members who read this newspaper.

You are the reason the MRLF is here.

You go to work each day and you take pride in your job.

You pay your union dues because you know your union contract provides you with good wages, benefits, and a voice at work.

You volunteer your time for community service as a member of your union and as an individual.

And, come election time, you are volunteering at phone banks or knocking on doors to help our labor-endorsed candidates win.

Thank you. Your active participation in your local union and in this federation is what makes the labor movement strong.

To the MRLF staff who have worked here over the years, thank you. Our political directors, our organizers, our office staff, our Working Partnerships staff and our Labor Review editor all have worked with skill and dedication to make this an increasingly effective organization.

What’s next? As we look to the challenges ahead and the 2016 elections, we know so much is at stake for working families and our labor movement. Working together, we know, we are stronger. Let’s keep working together, brothers and sisters. Let’s keep working for a better Minnesota as a strong, united labor movement.
