MRLF hires Anne Gabrys as field organizer for 2012 campaign
From the Minneapolis Labor Review, July 27, 2012
MINNEAPOLIS — Anne Gabrys began work July 9 as a field organizer working for the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation on the 2012 campaign.
Her territory will be Senate District 49 in Bloomington and Edina, where the MRLF will be working independently to help elect AFL-CIO endorsed candidates Melisa Franzen (Senate District 49), Ron Erhardt (House District 49A) and Paul Rosenthal (House District 49B).
“It’s diverse,” Gabrys said of Senate District 49. “It doesn’t fit all the stereotypes.”
“We’re going to focus mainly on targeted union members,” Gabrys noted. The largest numbers of union members in the area include nurses, teachers, and UFCW members.
“There’s a strong group of union activists in that area; we’re going to try to broaden it,” Gabrys said.
In addition to her work in Senate District 49, “I’ll be pitching in in other ways,” Gabrys said.
“I’ve done a lot of various campaigns and worked for some locals so this is a good fit,” Gabrys said. “I’m excited about it.”
Gabrys’ union experience includes working with the St. Paul Federation of Teachers to support its endorsed school board candidates and doing data entry for SEIU Local 26.
Her political experience includes serving as campaign manager for a Ramsey County candidate for district court judge. “She was the underdog and ended up winning,” Gabrys said.
“What got me started was in college I was an intern for the Al Franken Senate campaign in 2008,” Gabrys said. There she worked with Chelsie Glaubitz, who is now MRLF political director.
Gabrys, 24, was born in Two Harbors, Minnesota and grew up in Clear Lake, South Dakota. She graduated from the University of St. Catherine in St. Paul in 2010, majoring in political science and Spanish.
“Coming back to Minnesota is home for me,” she said.
Her mother is a MAPE union member who works for the State of Minnesota. Her father and two grandfathers worked as union railroad workers.
Gabrys lives in south Minneapolis.
