From the Minneapolis Labor Review, February 26, 2009

By Steve Share, Labor Review editor

MINNEAPOLIS — All 13 seats on the Minneapolis City Council are up for re-election this year with incumbents running in ten of the races.

Incumbents not running for re-election include: Paul Ostrow (Ward 1), Ralph Remington (Ward 10), and Scott Benson (Ward 11).

At the present time, the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation plans to wait to endorse in the races for the open City Council seats until after the DFL ward conventions.

The seven incumbents endorsed so far represent a first round of endorsements, noted Bill McCarthy, president of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation.

“All are labor champions in their own way,” he said.

Ward 2: Cam Gordon

In Ward 2, Council Member Cam Gordon is seeking a second term. Although Gordon did not run with AFL-CIO endorsement in 2001, he received a retroactive endorsement in 2008 in recognition of his support for labor during his time on the City Council. Gordon is the lone Green Party member of the City Council.

Ward 3: Diane Hofstede

In Ward 3, Council Member Diane Hofstede is seeking second term. She ran with AFL-CIO endorsement four years ago and also was labor-endorsed in her three successful campaigns for the Minneapolis Library Board in 1993, 1997, and 2001. Johnson is a former union member: A nurse, she was a member of the Minnesota Nurses Association from 1986-1998.

Ward 6: Robert Lilligren

In Ward 6, Council Member Robert Lilligren is seeking re-election to a second term. Prior to redistricting, he also was elected to represent Ward 8 in 2001. This year marks Lilligren’s third City Council campaign as the AFL-CIO endorsed candidate. Lilligren is another City Council member who is a former union member: He was a member of HERE Local 17 from 1979-1980.

Ward 8: Elizabeth Glidden

In Ward 8, Council Member Elizabeth Glidden is seeking a second term. Although she did not run with AFL-CIO endorsement four years ago, she became a strong labor ally on the City Council. Glidden took a lead role in guiding the labor peace policy through the City Council in 2007.

Ward 9: Gary Schiff

In Ward 9, Council Member Gary Schiff is seeking a third term. In each campaign, he has run with AFL-CIO endorsement. Another former union member serving on the City Council, Schiff was a member of AFSCME in the late 1990s. Schiff often takes the lead in the City Council as the sponsor of measures proposed by the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation.

Ward 12: Sandy Colvin Roy

In Ward 12, Council Member Sandy Colvin Roy is seeking re-election to a fourth term. She has run each race with AFL-CIO endorsement.
