Proven incumbents, savvy newcomers run for City Council with AFL-CIO endorsement

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO has made endorsements in 12 of the 13 City Council races on the November 3 ballot.
The group of endorsed candidates include nine proven incumbents and three savvy newcomers.
The AFL-CIO endorsed incumbents include:
• Cam Gordon, first elected 2005, running for re-election in Ward 2 (see story);
• Diane Hofstede, first elected 2005, running for a re-election in Ward 3;
• Barb Johnson, first elected 1997, the City Council president since 2006, running for re-election in Ward 4 (see story);
• Don Samuels, first elected 2003, running for re-election in Ward 5;
• Robert Lilligren, first elected 2001, running for re-election in Ward 6;
• Elizabeth Glidden, first elected 2005, running for re-election in Ward 8 (see story);
• Gary Schiff, first elected 2001, running for re-election in Ward 9;
• Sandy Colvin Roy, first elected 1997, running for re-election in Ward 12;
• Betsy Hodges, first elected 2005, running for re-election in Ward 13.
The new AFL-CIO endorsed candidates for City Council office include:
• Kevin Reich, running for the Ward 1 seat to be vacated by the retirement of Paul Ostrow;
• Meg Tuthill, running for the Ward 10 seat to be vacated by the retirement of Ralph Remington;
• John Quincy, running for the Ward 11 seat to be vacated by the retirement of Scott Benson (see story).
All of the City Council candidates endorsed by the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation also have been endorsed by the DFL Party, with the exception of Cam Gordon in Ward 2. He is endorsed by the Green Party — the DFL chose not to endorse in Ward 2.
