Suburban labor councils will host booths at the Scott, Carver, Wright county fairs

From the Minneapolis Labor Review, June 12, 2008

By Steve Share, Labor Review editor

MINNEAPOLIS — Visit the county fairs in Scott, Carver and Wright counties this summer and you will find a booth hosted by local unions. As part of continuing outreach to union members and the public, the suburban labor councils affiliated with the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation have found that hosting a booth at the county fair is a popular activity.

“It’s a good way to talk with the community about labor and who we are and the type of jobs we do,” said Gayle McMahon, MRLF political organizer and staff for the South Suburban Labor Council.

Last year, the newly-formed South Suburban Labor Council hosted a booth at the Scott County Fair for the first time. “We talked to a lot of union members who were glad to see us there,” McMahon said.

The South Suburban Labor Council booth will be back at the Scott County Fair this year, which runs July 23-27 in Jordan.

In addition, the South Suburban Labor Council will host a booth for the first time at the Carver County Fair, coming August 6-10 in Waconia.

The Wright County Labor Council will return for a third year with a booth at the Wright County Fair, running July 23-27 in Howard Lake.

This year, the Wright County Labor Council’s booth will double in size, said Jason George, MRLF political organizer.

At each of the three fairs, union members and the public will be able to enter daily drawings for gift certificates at local union grocery stores. United Food and Commercial Workers Local 653 is donating $250 towards gift certificates at each of the three fairs, matched by the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation.

The MRLF’s North Suburban Advisory Council will host a booth at the Game Fair in Anoka County August 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17 (see next month’s Labor Review).
