Above and below: The day before the convention began – Sunday, July 24 – brought a lively and raucous solidarity rally for “The Sweeney Solidarity Team.” The rally drew not only convention delegates but also hundreds of Chicago area union members wearing union colors. A parade of presidents of international unions, local union leaders, and union activists addressed the rally.

Right: Leo Gerard, president of the United Steel Workers of America, addresses the rally. "You're the front-line troops that are going to determine what kind of future our kids and grandkids are going to have," he said.

Speaking of the boycott of the convention by the Change to Win unions, Gerard said, "when I woke up this morning, I felt something had been torn from my heart. Those who left the House of Labor… shame on them… Solidarity is more than saying my way or the highway."

Above: AFL-CIO president John Sweeney (right) and secretary-treasurer Richard Trumka (left) wait their own turns to speak at the podium.

"John Sweeney has always been someone to willing to listen," said Harold Schaitberger, general president of the International Association of Fire Fighters. "He doesn't think he has every answer… He doesn't believe, 'it's my way or the highway…' John Sweeney is a leader who seeks consensus, to bring us all together."

Left: Howard Kling, director of the Labor Education Service at the University of Minnesota, shoots video of the rally for the Workday Minnesota labor news service. To view Workday Minnesota's video clips of the convention, visit www.workdayminnesota.org and follow the links for "Labor's Future."
